Until we’re Ashamed of ourselves in this life, we will never come to a point to see our dire need of a Saviour. The sinners real necessity is to be awakened (by the Spirit) to see and feel what a dreadful state they are in; a state of being under the Wrath of God and the Curse of His Law (Romans 7:9-11). Only then will a person Truly see their need for Jesus Christ (the Only Way)and come to have an (be)attitude of poor in spirit, mournful, meek and having no righteousness of their own, that they might be blessed (Matthew 5:3-6).
God said to Israel (and could to us too): “They see not, nor know; that they may be Ashamed”(Isaiah 44:9). You’ll either be made willing to be ashamed during your life here or be forever in shame and everlasting contempt (Daniel 12:2). Again, listen to the Lord God “They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, ALL of them: They shall go to confusion together that are makers of Idols (Isaiah 45:16). This is not just spoken of in the Old Testament. Hear the Word: “For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the Cross of Christ. Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly (Appetite), and whose glory is in their Shame, who mind earthly things (Phillipians 3:18-19).
How can this be?
By a Supernatural work of the Spirit of God are we enlightened to see in some measure the Supreme Excellency and loveliness of the Divine Character. He assures us of the Righteousness and goodness of God’s Law and how worthy He is entitled to be loved by us with All our hearts. At the same time, He convicts us of our wretched and lifelong failure to respond unto His most just claims upon us and that we have scorned His authority, Ignored His Commandments and acted only in self-will (John 16:8, Revelation 3:17) -- Then it is for the first time we begin to perceive the Infinite Evil of Sin, and are filled with Self-loathing, horror and grief at our terrible course of conduct.
We can then (being divinely-enabled) turn to God in True Repentance once we’ve realized that our rebellion against God was such that Nothing but the Death of Christ, His Only Son, could possibly atone for it. The picture is as clear as Christ painted it when He said: “For Whoever is Ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be Ashamed of him when He comes in the Glory of His Father with the Holy Angels” (Mark 8:38). Either you will feel the deserving Shame now or Christ will be Ashamed of you then!
What does this look like?
“Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was Ashamed, yea even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth” (Jeremiah 31:19). This was Ephraim's prayer answered; as he prayed he might be turned, he was; and when he was turned, then he repented, not only of sin in general, but of such sins as he had been particularly guilty of; not only of the grosser actions of life, but of inward sins, secret lusts and corruptions; even of sins of holy things, having now different sentiments, affections, and conduct: and this is what is called Evangelical Repentance. It is from the grace of God; springs from love; flows from a sight of God and a view of Christ; is increased by the discoveries of God's love, and is unto life and salvation... The words may be rendered; what a sinful, guilty, impure, and impotent, and unrighteous creature he was; after that he became acquainted with himself, and his wretched state and condition; when instructed by the word and by the Spirit of God; when led into the knowledge of divine things; of the love and grace of God through Christ; of the person, offices, and glory of Christ; and this sort of repentance follows upon conversion; there must be first a true and real conversion before this evangelical repentance can take place (J. Gill Comm - Jer 31:19)
Dear reader, Let us heed this warning this day.. before as Jeremiah said: “The wind shall eat up All thy Pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: Surely then shall thou be Ashamed and Confounded for all thy wickedness” (Jeremiah 22:22). Or know in the end: “For you shall be Ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, and you shall be Confounded for the gardens that you have chosen. For you shall be as an oak whose leaf fades, and as a garden that has no water" (Isaiah 1:29-30).
Christ’s Promise
Fear Not; For thou shall not be Ashamed: neither be thou Confounded; for thou shall not be put to shame: for thou shall forget the Shame of thy youth” (Isaiah 54:4). Here the Apostle Paul: “For I am not Ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes" (Romans 1:16). This is the day of salvation, Let us turn course, to God and not forget: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and Believe the Gospel” (Mark 1:15). Remembering the Lord said in Isaiah 49:23b:
“For they shall not be Ashamed that wait for me”..
